What Materials Are Sustainable Sneakers Made From?
Isn’t it a great feeling to wear shoes that are not only designed to last a long time, but were also made using processes that minimize impact on the environment?
Whether you’re a fan of classic canvas sneakers, prefer a more luxe leather, or love a lightweight knit shoe, all of Cariuma’s materials are sustainably-sourced. Wonder what materials our sustainable sneakers are made from? Let’s find out!

The Body of the Shoe
Bamboo
Bamboo is a strong fiber with a naturally fast growth cycle and high CO₂ absorption, it’s also a great material for making shoes! Our IBI sneakers are made with bamboo and recycled PET to create the perfect fit bamboo knit. Our bamboo is certified by Forest Stewardship Council and OEKO-TEX.
Organic Cotton
So, you like the look of canvas sneakers? We do, too. We’re proud to say that our OCA sneakers are made with organic cotton canvas. By using organic methods of farming, we protect the environment from toxic chemicals and pesticides. The result? Classic sneakers that are made sustainably, for you and the planet.
Leather/Suede
We believe that every step in the production of shoes should be done responsibly and with care, which is why we take special measures to source our leather & suede responsibly. None of our premium materials are sourced from any area deforested for cattle-farming purposes.

The Insoles/Soles
Rubber
Our OCA and CATIBA sneakers come with a rubber outsole. Our perfectly-weighted natural rubber is gathered from the hevea brasiliensis tree through ethical “tapping” (removing a milky sap from its bark). So, no trees are ever harmed in the production of our sneakers!
Sugarcane
Our IBI sneakers outsoles are constructed with fully-renewable, bio-based resource that grows quickly and naturally removes carbon from the atmosphere. Instead of traditional irrigation, our sugarcane uses natural rainwater to grow, ultimately making for environmentally friendly shoes.
Mamona Oil
Mamona is a plant-based and organic alternative to petroleum. We chose this natural oil in order to significantly decrease our use of virgin plastics and increase the natural content of our products, thus delivering a much greener foam.
